Health Benefits of Beets

Beets are loaded with nutrients but low in calories.  They actually contain a bit of almost every vitamin and mineral that you need!  Beets get their rich color from inorganic nitrates and pigments that are plant compounds and have additional health benefits.  

Beets are high in:

The nitrates found in beets seem to improve the efficiency of the mitochondria which produces energy into the cells.  Eating beets may help contribute to increased oxygen use.  Both of these benefits are what links beets to positively affecting athletic performance.  Athletes are advised to consume beets about 2-3 hours before training or competing to receive their maximized benefits. 

With beets being rich in fiber, they may improve digestive health.  There are 3.5 grams of fiber in just one cup of beetroot.  Fiber helps to keep you regular which may prevent conditions such as constipation, colon cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Beets can increase blood flow to the brain which has been associated with higher-level thinking like memory, reaction time, and decision making.
